Don’t talk to me about nappies
One of the quickest ways to improve your communications is to apply the Rule of Relevancy.
#1 RIGHT MESSAGE - don’t talk to me about nappies, I’m well passed that stage of life (but do talk to me about coffee, HRT, books and dogs and you are onto a winner!). The more you can understand your audience, team member, customer or mother in-law, the better engagement you will get.
#2. RIGHT TIME - don’t email me with your special offers if I’ve just shopped with you. Don’t tell me how great your business is if I’ve just had a bad experience. Don’t persevere selling me your premium products when the economy is struggling. Invest in systems that allow you to track and analyse transactions and interactions so you can see patterns and infer behaviours that allow you to better craft the timing of your communications.
#3. RIGHT MEDIA - each type of media has special attributes: newspaper is great for lots of information that has a shelf life of a few days. Texting (SMS) is great for instant, short, sharp messages like appointment reminders. Face to face meetings are better for complex, detailed communications that may require two-way interaction. Let customers tell you how they want to be communicated with - text reminders, email offers, instore sampling etc.
Invest the time and apply the Rule of Relevancy in your personal and business interactions. We’ve all experienced what it feels like to have a really great communication or connection with a person or brand. It creates loyalty, builds trust and relationships, averts disasters and makes the home and work environment a better place.
